IELTS Test Overview
In the IELTS Exam you are tested on 4 skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking).
You can do either the Academic IELTS Exam which is mostly for those looking to study and work in a foreign country or company or the General IELTS Exam which is mostly for those looking to work in a foreign country or company.
The speaking and listening are the same for both types but reading and writing are different. The total time taken to complete the whole exam is approx. 3 hours.
Listening
There are 4 sections and a total of 40 questions. You will hear the recording only once.
The recordings contain both conversations and monologues (one person speaking).
You get between 15-40 seconds to read the questions before the listening begins.
You are tested on your ability to understand and pick up on numbers, names, and various other details and also the speakers general opinion.
Reading
There are 40 questions in the reading section.
You will be tested on your reading for gist and reading for detail skills.
IELTS Academic test -You answer questions on 3 long texts with are often adapted from authentic texts (e.g. magazines). You should spend 20mins on each text.
IELTS General Training test – You will answer questions on a variety of texts which are taken from everyday life (e.g. newspaper ads).

IELTS Academic test
The academic test covers topics suitable to those interested in studies or the professional/job world.
Task 1 -You are asked to summarise information and details of a graph, table or chart in a coherent and structured way.
Task 2 – You are asked to write an essay providing your opinion in response to a statement or argument. This includes giving advantages and disadvantages or problems and solutions.
IELTS General Training
You are also asked to do two tasks:
Task 1 – You are asked to write a letter. This can be formal or informal.
Task 2 – You are asked to write an essay providing your opinion in response to a statement or argument. This includes giving advantages and disadvantages or problems and solutions.
Examination
IELTS Academic and General test
There are one examiner and one student. The exam takes between 11-14 minutes and every exam is recorded.
Part 1 – Personal questions including topics such as where you live, family, work, study, sport etc.
Part 2 -You are given a task and have 1min to make notes before speaking alone for 2mins on the topic.
Part 3 – You are asked further questions related to the topic in part 2. These questions require you to answer in detail on more general topics.
